Description

Also known as Central Valley Cemetery and Black Canyon Cemetery. Central Valley Cemetery is located in the City of Shasta Lake, formerly Central Valley. The cemetery was created in 1941 by the United States Congress to hold the 298 of the 301 people buried in 26 cemeteries that were going to be flooded by the creation of Shasta Lake. The bodies were moved between Feb. 11th and March 23rd, 1942 by Joseph B. Mashburn of the Madra Funeral Home. Congress created two different cemeteries adjoined together: Central Valley Cemetery for the whites and U.S. Shasta Indian Cemetery where Native Americans were / are buried for free and do not have to pay tax.
